It is the transition from the Alps
to the flat lowlands of Provence that is characteristic of the
countryside around Sisteron. In the north the country is mountainous
with the peaks of the Alps within sight. Castles and fortresses,
sleepy valleys and clear mountain lakes, and the big Durance
river make up its variety. The whole area is full of interesting
sights: 16th-century bridges fallen into oblivion in remote
valleys, evidence of Roman settlements, churches showing the
simple beauty of Romanesque style such as the cathedral
of Sisteron.
Towards the south and west extends Provence with its olive and
almond trees, lavender fields, and vineyards. For those interested
in nature and fossils 4 large nature reserves are within easy
reach, as e.g. the "geological reserve of Haute Provence“
and the regional parks of Verdon and Lubéron.
